Basic Intravenous Therapy Refresher Course for Licensed Practical Nurses

 

Selection Criteria For Students: 

Participants must:

1)     Possess a current license to practice practical nursing in the State of Wyoming.

2)     Be in good standing with the Wyoming Board of Nursing. 

3)     Have passed a basic  IV therapy course for practical nurses.

          a.       This certificate must be shown to your proctor for the practicum. 

 

 Overall Goal 

 

To provide a mechanism for maintaining and evaluating skill levels acceptable to the Wyoming Board of Nursing.

 

General Course Objectives

  

At the completion of all course instruction, the student will:

1.       Review the policies, procedures, rules and regulations that govern the Licensed Practical Nurse in Wyoming when administering and managing IV therapy.

2.       Explore legal implications when administering and managing IV therapy.

3.       Review basic knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the adult circulatory system. 

4.       Identify the role of fluid and electrolytes in maintenance of homeostasis. 

5.       Identify the principles of pharmacology as they relate to IV therapy. 

6.       Recognize the drugs and solutions commonly used in IV therapy and discuss their action, correct dosage, and adverse effects.

7.       Review safe use of selected IV equipment.

8.       Review ability to calculate correctly the flow rate and regulate selected infusion.

9.       Review the ability to safely perform venipunctures with selected equipment.

10.   Review safe, effective care of patients receiving IV therapy and discuss the signs and symptoms.

11.   List the complications that may occur from IV therapy and discuss the signs and symptoms.

12.   Define the nursing action taken if complications occur. 

 

General Course Requirements

1.       The length of the course shall be a minimum of 6 hours didactics and 2 hours clinical experience. 

2.       The course once began will need to be completed in 30 calendar days. 

3.       A finial practicum examination will include a demonstration of a minimum of one supervised successful venipuncture infusion set up.

4.       Graduates of the course will receive a “Certificate of Completion.”

5.       The Basic Intravenous Therapy for Licensed Practical Nurses Refresher Course shall be revised and updated by the Wyoming State Board of Nursing as necessary.   For updates go to https://nursing-online.state.wy website for updates.

Course Description

 

This Basic Intravenous Therapy for Licensed Practical Nurses Refresher Course is designed so the student  can demonstrate the skills and knowledge needed to administer and mange IV therapy.   Basic Guidelines include: background information: legal; aspects of IV system; fluid and electrolyte balance; procedure for venipuncture; prevention and assessment of complications; principles of pharmacology as related to IV therapy; and demonstration of required skills. 

  

Course Content

 

Unit       1             LPN IV Therapy Governing Regulations & Legal Implications

Unit       2             Review of   Anatomy and Physiology  of the adult circulatory system

Unit       3             Fluid and Electrolyte Balance

Unit       4             Pharmacology related to IV therapy

Unit       5             Starting, Maintaining and Discontinuing Intravenous Therapy

Unit       6             Clinical Application

 

 

 

Explanation of the Unit format

       

1.       Registration and payment is on line. 

2.       Once registered, your username and password will be e-mailed to you.

3.       To access to the Units you will need to use your username and password

4.       Each Unit consists of a presentation with handouts that can be downloaded.

             a.       Review the material: Presentation; Power points, handouts, and demonstrations

              b.       There will be an assessment the end of each unit.   A passing score of 80% is required on each unit assessment. 

5.       Discuss Clinical Application practicum  (Unit 6) with your Director of Nursing to arrange for a proctor. 

             a.       Practicum requires a Proctor for the skills

                                                                                         i.      The proctor is to be a currently licensed registered nurse in Wyoming.

             b.       Show your proctor the “Certificate  of Completion” received from the Basic IV Therapy Course.  

             c.       Provide the “Critical Criteria For Clinical Practicum”  form

             d.       Unit 6 Basic IV Therapy Refresher Course for LPN’s form

             e.       Unit 6 Overview (Reminder this unit is to be 2 hours in length)

             f.        It’s your responsibility to mail the complete forms  to HEDS, Inc.

             g.       Please  keep the original certificate, and give copies to any agency requesting one.   

6.       Evaluation required at the end of this unit.

 

Certificate of Completion

1.       When all six units have been completed please e-mail Renee’ Foos at <rfoos@heds.org> stating you have completed the online course and practicum. 

2.       She will verify successful completion of Units 1-6

3.       Health Education Development System, (HEDS,  Inc.) will award a “Certificate of  Completion” sent electronically to your e-mail address listed on the registration form.
